OIC Secretary General Calls for Harmonization of Halal Standards

(Jeddah-NewsHalal- Rabi’I, 18, 1439H- 05 Dec 2017) Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conference calls for harmonization of Halal Standards as the global concerns regarding different Halal Standards among Islamic Countries, regions and Halal certifying bodies.

The OIC Secretary General, Dr. Yousef A. Othaimeen received in audience, the Secretary General of the Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries (SMIIC), His Excellency, Mr. Ihsan Ovut at the Headquarters of the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on 5 December 2017.

The OIC Secretary General Al Othaimeen congratulated Mr. Ihsan Ovut for his re-election as the Secretary General at the General Assembly Meeting of SMIIC, held in Istanbul, Turkey, on 26 November 2017.

While commending the steady expansion of SMIIC membership and activities, Dr. Othaimeen pointed out the importance of the harmonized Halal Standards, and encouraged SMIIC to consolidate its role in developing unified Halal standards in all fields among OIC Member States.

Muslim consumers and producers of Halal products and services growingly expressing concerns on different Halal standards practicing by Halal Certifying and accreditation bodies among Islamic and even non-Islamic countries and regions.

Eying to become Halal hub to tab larger benefits of Halal boom, a number of countries and regions pushing for their own Halal Standards despite the fact that the OIC-SMIIC striving to make consensus on a unified Halal Standards among Islamic countries.
