University of Karachi sign MoU with SANHA to enhance Halal Food Testing HALALTRENDS

Karachi- International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) University of Karachi has signed a mutual agreement with the SANHA Halal Associates Pakistan Limited to enhance the scope of Halal food testing services all over the country.

An official of ICCBS said that both the institutions mutually agreed to develop a linkage for the joint working on the testing and Research and Development (R&D) activities at Halal Testing Laboratory (HTL) at the ICCBS. Director ICCBS Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary and CEO SANHA Halal Associates Pakistan Mufti Yousuf Abdul Razzaq signed the agreement on behalf of their institutions at a ceremony.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Bhanger, Dr. Syed Ghulam Musharraf, Dr. Kamran Azim, Dr. Shakeel Ahmed and Mufti Arif Ali Shah were also present. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Iqbal Choudhary said that the prime objective of this agreement is to work in collaboration for bringing science, technology and Shariah close to each other with regard to the analysis of non-Halal ingredient in food and non-food items.

He said that the aim of this agreement is to establish collaboration in Halal affairs including accreditation, quality system implementation for halal products and services performing under responsibilities of each institute. Public awareness programs, seminars will also be organized jointly on related issues, he added.

In a response to NewsHalal.com question about how the MoU between University of Karachi and SANHA Pakistan would contribute to the Halal sector of Pakistan, Mufti Yousuf Abdul Razzaq, the CEO SANHA Halal Associates Pakistan said "The main objective of the agreement is to work in collaboration bringing science, technology and Shari’ah close to each other with regard to the analysis of non-Halal ingredient in food and non-food items".

"To enhance the scope of Halal testing services all over the country, SANHA Pakistan will help the ICCBS in promotion of the activities of HTL at national and international level. ICCBS would recommend to the client for Shari’ah advice to SANHA Pakistan and likewise, SANHA will make all efforts to introduce HTL of the ICCBS to various clients. Where possible a joint report of analysis may be given to the client". He added.

Mufti Yousuf further stressed that the "ICCBS would offer special discount to SANHA Pakistan recommended clients for Halal testing and likewise, SANHA PAKISTAN would offer special discount to ICCBS recommended clients for Halal evaluation and Shari’ah advice. R&D activities at the HTL will be carried out on debatable issues like GMO food, traceability of non-Halal ingredients in consultation with SANHA, PAKISTAN".

Halal laboratory testing of foods, beverages, cosmetics and even pharmaceutical products becoming a crucial issue in the Halal sector. In this regard, establishment of Halal testing facility in Pakistan would pave the way for Pakistan food industry and exports.
